Why do prompting strategies reduce power struggles?

You've probably been there. You give a clear direction, wait, and nothing happens. You repeat it. Still nothing. Then the frustration builds on both sides, and suddenly a simple request turns into a standoff neither of you wanted.

Power struggles rarely start with defiance, even when it looks that way. When a learner doesn't respond, adults tend to read it as a choice. Prompting research points to something else: often the learner needs a different form of support, and the way we offer it can shift the whole interaction.

If you only try one thing from this page, make it WAIT. You may be surprised how often a few extra seconds are all that's needed.

What we often assume

When someone doesn't respond to a direction, the first stories our brains tell us tend to sound like this:

"They're ignoring me."

"They're refusing."

"They aren't listening."

"They're being defiant."

These interpretations feel obvious in the moment. And because they all point to the learner's intent, they pull us toward responses that escalate: repeating louder, adding consequences, withdrawing support. That's where the power struggle begins.

What might actually be happening

If we set aside the assumption of intent for a moment, the research suggests a handful of other explanations:

Auditory processing takes time, especially for complex or multi-step directions.

Planning, sequencing, and initiation are all executive skills, and they can be flooded by stress or demand.

Knowing what to do and knowing how to start are two different things.

Initiation is one of the most vulnerable executive functions, and it doesn't improve with repetition of the same demand.

When the body goes into a stress response, higher-order thinking becomes harder to access.

Ambiguity is uncomfortable, and some learners freeze when they can't predict what success looks like.

None of these mean the learner is doing something to you. They're experiencing something. And that difference changes how we respond.

What the evidence suggests

Prompting works because it changes the conditions around a demand instead of adding pressure to it. That finding runs through decades of research in applied behavior analysis, special education, and developmental psychology.

When a prompt narrows the gap between what someone is being asked to do and what they understand about how to do it, uncertainty drops. And when uncertainty drops, so does the anxiety that fuels resistance.

Prompts also serve as external scaffolding for executive functioning. Planning, sequencing, working memory: these are the cognitive skills that often get overloaded during a challenging moment. A well-placed prompt does some of that work for the learner, temporarily.

There's an escalation piece, too. When the adult responds to non-compliance with support instead of increased demand, the situation has nowhere to climb. The cycle breaks before it starts.

All of this protects the relationship. A prompt says "I'm going to help you do this" instead of "Do this or else." Over time, the learner begins to see the adult as someone who helps rather than someone who pressures.

And prompting builds independence, which might sound counterintuitive. But giving targeted support, then fading it as the learner gains traction, creates more independence than withholding support and waiting.

When the skill is new, the learner needs more support up front. Start with the most supportive prompts and pull back gradually as they gain footing.

Think of it like teaching someone to ride a bike. You don't hand them the bike and wait to see what happens. You hold the seat, run alongside, let go for a second, catch them, and gradually widen the gap until they're riding on their own.

Supporting a familiar skill

When the learner has done the skill before, start with the least intrusive support. Give them a chance to show you what they know before adding more help. Move through the hierarchy gradually rather than jumping straight to full direction.

Before adding another prompt, try the WAIT strategy first. Many learners need more processing time than we naturally give them.

Why Am I Talking?

Before you repeat a direction, give the brain time to finish processing the first one. For many learners, especially those with language processing differences or executive functioning challenges, 5 to 10 seconds of silence does more than another round of words.

It feels uncomfortable. Five seconds of silence after a direction can feel like an eternity when you're standing in a classroom or a busy kitchen. But rushing to fill that silence with a repeat or a redirect can actually interrupt the processing that was already underway.

Sometimes the most effective prompt is just time.

Start with the least intrusive support. Increase only as needed.

Independent

The learner completes the task on their own. Celebrate and reinforce.

Pause 5 to 10 seconds. Processing time is powerful.

Start here first. Give the learner the greatest opportunity for independence.

A look, point, nod, or other nonverbal cue.

Visual Cue

Use pictures, visuals, written words, or visual reminders.

More supportive

Move down only if needed. Use the least intrusive prompt that works.

Indirect Verbal Cue

Ask a question or give a hint to encourage thinking. "What comes next?"

Direct Verbal Reminder

Clear, concise reminder of the expectation.

Model / Demonstrate

Show the expected action or think aloud.

Most supportive

Use only when necessary, and always fade as independence grows.

Physical Guidance

Use only when necessary for safety or teaching. Fade as soon as possible.

As independence grows, prompts fade.
